The human eye<\/strong> is an amazing machine<\/strong>. Through tiny cells called cones<\/strong>, our eyes are able to see about 10 million<\/strong> different colors<\/strong>. But not all colors<\/strong> are created equal<\/strong>, and some are just too difficult to look at as they can cause headaches<\/strong>, high blood pressure<\/strong>, and eye strain<\/strong>. With the increase in time spent<\/strong> in front of our digital devices – six to nine hours<\/strong> per day on average – the colors<\/strong> and even the fonts<\/strong> we stare at on our digital screens can become sights for sore eyes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Impact of Color and Fonts on the Eyes<\/h2>\n

Bright colors<\/strong> in particular can be harsh<\/strong> on our eyes – but they also draw<\/strong> our attention<\/strong>. Think about the color yellow<\/strong>. In lighter shades, yellow<\/strong> is comforting<\/strong> and cheerful<\/strong>. But when the brightness<\/strong> is cranked up<\/strong>, yellow<\/strong> can be a stimulant<\/strong> on the eyes. Studies show that babies cry<\/strong> more often in yellow<\/strong> rooms<\/strong> and couples<\/strong> tend to fight more<\/strong> in rooms with yellow paint<\/strong>. However, given its ranking as the most visible<\/strong> of all the colors, yellow<\/strong> is a great color to use when you need to grab attention<\/strong>. This explains the use of bright yellow on warning signs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Different fonts<\/strong> can play tricks on our eyes too. Even though Times New Roman<\/strong> is a common default font<\/strong> in many computer programs, this font can actually hurt your eyes<\/strong>. The tiny tails<\/strong> on the end of each letter, called serifs<\/strong>, will force you to stare longer<\/strong> in order to recognize a word<\/strong>. This can lead to eye fatigue<\/strong>. Luckily there are fonts<\/strong>, such as Arial<\/strong> and Verdana<\/strong>, without serifs (sans-serifs<\/strong>), that have more space<\/strong> between each letter and are easier to read<\/strong> from farther away<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

How to Stop Eye Strain from Harsh Colors and Fonts<\/h2>\n

It’s recommended<\/strong> that we stretch before a work-out<\/strong> to ensure we don’t strain our muscles, but have you stopped to think about the strain you put on your eye muscles<\/strong> everyday as you stare<\/strong> at your computer<\/strong>, television<\/strong>, phone<\/strong>, and other devices<\/strong>? You’ve most likely felt the effects of digital eye strain<\/strong> and computer vision syndrome<\/strong> – headaches, dryeyes, blurred vision, or even a sore neck – but what can you do to stop this pain<\/strong>? An easy way to combat eye strain<\/strong> is to simply adjust a few settings on your computer<\/strong>:<\/p>\n
