If they are missing it is called\u00a0<strong>protanopia<\/strong>\u00a0or sometimes\u00a0<strong>red-dichromacy<\/strong>. Affected persons are\u00a0<em>dichromats<\/em>\u00a0because they have only two working cone types, short- and medium-wavelength, compared to persons with normal vision with three different cone types.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3330\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/425476843_8768b63100_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"782\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If the L-cones are defective they appear in different intensities. This results in either a stronger or a weaker color blindness. If L-cones are not missing but defective it is called\u00a0<strong>protanomaly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3331\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/B3F25A09-C380-4A1A-8DEB-ADD9170CA67E.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Protanopes are more likely to confuse:-<br \/>\n1. Black with many shades of red<br \/>\n2. Dark brown with dark green, dark orange and dark red<br \/>\n2. Some blues with some reds, purples and dark pinks<br \/>\n3. Mid-greens with some oranges<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3332\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/colorblind-protanopia-vs-original.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"206\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There are a number of studies which show that color vision deficiencies are a serious\u00a0<strong>risk factor in driving<\/strong>. Particularly protan color blindness reduces substantially the ability to see red lights, regardless of the severity of the defect. Tests showed that protans were very much over-represented in an accident causing group of drivers mostly involving either signal lights or break lights. Some scientists estimate that being a protan has associated with it a level of risk of road accident that is equivalent to having a blood alcohol level of between 0.05 and 0.08 per cent.
