autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>We will use this to determine if your monitor has PWM flicker or no at both max and min brightness.<\/p>\n<p>I will tell you what to look for but first a little intro on<\/p>\n<h1>What is PWM flicker?<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pwm-led-and-ccfl.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8583\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pwm-led-and-ccfl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"260\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/pwm-flicker\/\">PWM flicker<\/a>\u00a0is a cheap way that manufacturers use to control the brightness of the screen by adding some breaks without light.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, on a given interval your monitor is OFF then after some milliseconds\u00a0ON again.<\/p>\n<p>Our brain is slow and we don&#8217;t perceive\u00a0this but we get huge eye strain and eye pain from this.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the main reasons why our eyes hurt in front of the computer.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this constant\u00a0ON and OFF of the backlight our eyes contract all the time like this<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/eye-pwm-flicker.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is why PWM flicker causes so much eye strain and is undesirable.<\/p>\n<p>Most monitors flicker only when the brightness is lowered so when the hardware brightness is at 100% there is no flicker.<\/p>\n<p>This is why my recommendation\u00a0when you download <a href=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\">Iris<\/a> is to set your\u00a0hardware brightness to the MAX and control the brightness with Iris.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/iris-brightness.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8584\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/iris-brightness.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"518\" height=\"530\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Iris uses <a href=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/how-iris-reduces-pwm-flicker-medium\/\">another method<\/a> to control the brightness which doesn&#8217;t cause eye strain and eye pain.<\/p>\n<h1>What to look for?<\/h1>\n<p>Depending on\u00a0how you see the moving line you can determine if your monitor uses PWM to control the brightness.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pwm-flicker-types.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8424\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pwm-flicker-types.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"641\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>If your monitor doesn&#8217;t use PWM you will see a smooth moving line like this<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/smooth-moving-line.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8586\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/smooth-moving-line.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"98\" height=\"70\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>You can test this by setting your\u00a0hardware brightness to 100%.<\/p>\n<p>When your hardware brightness is set to 100% your monitor doesn&#8217;t use PWM in all cases and you should see this smooth line.<\/p>\n<p>Now set your\u00a0hardware brightness to the minimum\u00a0possible value.<\/p>\n<p>If your monitor uses DC dimming instead of PWM the test line should look smooth like this<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/test-line-no-pwm.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8587\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/test-line-no-pwm.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"81\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If your monitor uses PWM to control the brightness you will see multiple lines on the screen separated by some space like this<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pwm-flicker-on-different-screens.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8588\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pwm-flicker-on-different-screens.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"631\" height=\"164\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h1>What to do if my monitor uses PWM?<\/h1>\n<p>1. Set your monitor Hardware brightness to <strong>100%<\/strong> using your monitor buttons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Brightness.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5848 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/iristech.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Brightness.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2.
